It would be the understatement of the year to say that the last week in New York City has been an odd one. First an earthquake and this week a hurricane….. With all the Irene hype and such it has been a strange world. The massive MTA shutdown (the first in NYC history), the evacuation of low lying areas know as “Zone A” including my neighborhood, and the mad rushes at the local grocery stores have just been a few of the oddities over the last several days.

In the end, Irene came softly upon New York compared to the predictions of just a day ago. From my apartment (I know, kind of a rebel as we stayed in Zone A) we could see the massive rise in the East River and the storm surge come up over the piers and eat part of our local park. We were pretty lucky in our neighborhood.

I have never seen so much open parking and quiet on the streets. This morning I stared at the Long Island Expressway/495 for over 15 minutes. Not one car for over 15 minutes in either direction! This is steps from the midtown tunnel!! This NEVER happens. What an odd site to see.

Others around the country were hit much worse. So I thank Irene for letting us go easy and hope that the many others not so lucky can get their lives back in order soon.

It’s been a long, long hiatus from tumblr for me. I just looked back and realized I haven’t posted a new photo since MARCH. It’s been FIVE MONTHS since I’ve updated this blog. Uncool. I now have internet in my home and am not split between two apartments spending many, many hours/week on the subway. I have no more excuses. I do, however have something VERY exciting in the works that has been taking up a lot of my time, which I will be able to reveal within a month or so! More regular posting to start today-promise.

So happy to be finished editing after a hair shoot with 16 models, an infant, 2 cats, 2 kids, and a puppy. It might be after midnight on the night my mom and grandma got into the city, but the joy of accomplishment is SO worth it!

My parents, especially my mom, have been watching me shoot and looking at my photographs for a very long time, to say the least. Yesterday, my mom saw this still life on my website. I took it while shooting a 48hr Film Project with some friends. We decided to go out to an abandoned, allegedly haunted, farm, and I shot a series of creepy found-object still life images out there. She sent an email that read, “I adore one picture with broken canning jar and red leaf in your personal section- beautiful. Right up my alley. Your pictures are gorgeous.” I sent her a print of it this morning. These past few months have been totally new territory for me, so encouragement like that, from someone who has been inundated with photographs from me over the years, means more than I have the words to express.
